I've glanced over the site and this forum and I'm a little unclear on the subject of the Featured Listing and Featured Update on the main page.

Out of curiosity, what determines what makes an update or listing 'featured'? I've seen listings with ratings as low as two stars get featured, so it doesn't necessarily seem to be the most popular stories going up.

I'm suspicious the featured update bit is derived from RSS feeds (and added my RSS feed to my submission), but I'm especially curious about the featured listing. I'm not really going out of my way to advertise my story, I'm really majorly hugely thankful for the readers & the feedback this site provides, and I'm planning on getting into reviews in the new year. I'm just wondering how this (prominent) part of Webfictionguide works, before I get underway, both for potential exposure for my story and for worthy stories I happen to review.

(Hoping the featured update/listing requirement isn't "don't ask about the featured update/listing", haha)

I see that you links available to put on other sites to link back to this one, but they all seem to lead back to Bing. I want to link back to this site, but I want to make sure it's in a way this site owner approves.

I'm not entirely sure how these links are to be used or how you want them to appear. Would you not like me to simply list a text link that goes directly to the home page here?

Please advise.

Thanks,

One thing I've noticed is that when I've been writing reviews I've explained (occasionally) why I gave it the star rating I did. A few other reviewers are doing the same thing. This works on the webfiction dedicated page, but I notice that if you click the reviews link and read the reviews en masse, all you get is the text of the review -- the stars don't display. For that reason I'm going to go back through my reviews and actually list the star rating in the text, so that if I do explain why I rated it as I did there will be some context. But I was wondering if there was a way to show the star rating with the reviews in all of the views? Maybe not, but if it's possible it would be helpful.

I've noticed that a number of listings -- for example, the Legion of Nothing page -- have a section that updates any time the story is updated. This "Latest Updates" section appears to be attached to the rss feed associated with the story, though I'm not 100% sure of that.

When I submitted Pay Me, Bug! I included an rss feed, but my listing doesn't have a "Latest Updates" section. The feed is valid, but because I'm running on an SSL-enabled site it uses https instead of http. Could that be affecting whether or not the Latest Updates section is triggered? Or is there something else that needs to be set up before it works?

I don't know if this is the place to post this, and don't want to appear impatient, but I realized I haven't seen anything regarding how long it takes a story to be listed, once registered.

Any estimate of how long between submitting a story and when it will be available to view?

Thank you.

Oh, I just remembered something that doesn't often come up so I forget about it -- when I'm reviewing and giving a star rating, the line moves when I try to click 2.5 stars, so I can't click it. I have to choose 2 or 3, and sometimes I dither about it. Does anyone else have a similar graphic problem or is it just me?

And how can it be fixed?

I suspect WebFictionGuide would be a lot more successful if it had more votes for things, kind of a 'yeah this site is active so trust the opinions' here deal.

And an easy way to get more votes would be to change the voting system to one like the webcomic listing sites use, i.e. no log-in but check for duplicate I.P.'s and require a quick anti-bot thing to avoid scams. Adding in the ability for authors to post some sort of 'thanks for voting' content, like a preview of the next chapter, would also help.

Just an idea!

To the site administrators and editors ,I must regretfully announce that several of my webserial stories have been removed from my web site and from my blog. They are still available as ebooks, but as they are no longer free, they do not qualify as webfiction. I wished to inform you of this change, and let you know what stories were no longer available.

Zombie Punter, Blind Rage, Waiting for a Miracle, and Blood Relations are no longer hosted on my site archives.

Touched, Erick’s Journey, Eddie’s First Circus, and A Frosty Girl’s Cure are still available, and will remain free for the foreseeable future.

Is there a procedure in place for updating a listing? I don't even know if I submitted the MU listing or if someone else did... I'd like to get the frequency of updates corrected to "Mondays and Fridays." and get a more recent screenshot.

As some more general suggestions that were in the middle of a TL;DR stream on another thread or occurred to me after writing them.

1. A prominent link to the beginning of each story (or the first story on a collection site) right in the middle of the listing page? The fewer clicks it takes to get to the beginning, the better.
2. A more obvious link to the site on the listings. Clicking the thumbnail might be intuitive, but your intuition isn't my intuition isn't J. Random Internetperson's intuition.
3. Could we get a little icon that displays after the name of the site whenever the site generates a link to the listing that opens up the story's site? The listings are good, the listings are valuable, but we really would benefit from making it easy for people to give in to an impulse and just check something out.

I emailed this question but didn't get a response. I don't know if I sent my question to the right place, so I'm posting here now. I was wondering if anyone else was having a similar problem?

My listing page for Eikasia (http://webfictionguide.com/listings/eikasia/) doesn't seem to be updating its RSS feed. I was thinking this may have been because I updated the page approx. three weeks ago, but I'm not sure. I've been updating since July 16th and it hasn't shown this--which leaves me out of the recently updated feed that's on WFG's front page. Since my feed has stopped working, traffic from WFG has waned greatly. People browsing through see the last update as June 18th, and so I'm guessing they think the story has gone dead or is still in hiatus. I clicked on the feed link on the listing page and it works fine--it even displays my recent updates, so I don't understand why this doesn't show on the listing page itself.

Can anyone help with this?
