<description>&#60;p&#62;Hi all,&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Just deleted the last new topic and banned the poster. I'm happy to have members talk about their projects—even commercial ones—but for somebody to join and post a commercial message before doing anything else is my definition of spam.&#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;Hi all,&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;WFG and related sites will be participating in the &#60;a href=&#34;http://sopablackout.org/&#34;&#62;SOPA blackout&#60;/a&#62; starting at midnight Eastern Time tonight. Haven't yet decide if the site will be completely dark or not. I was going to save it for a surprise, but changed my mind. :-)&#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;To everyone waiting on a submission approval, we do have an extensive backlog of new submissions.  I apologize for the delay -- we're all volunteers, here, and everyone has just been very busy, these last few months.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The good news is that I just completed my largest real-life obligation, and hope to spend a couple of hours on the queue this weekend.  With luck, that will get us back to a reasonable response time.  &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Again, I apologize for the delay.&#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;Hi all,&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;As voting seems up, in general, I've decided topwebfiction.com can handle a longer interval and still stay interesting.  I'm trying a 7 day interval for the next little while.  Let me know what you think.&#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;So Chris is rebuilding WFG from the ground up, and I'm helping do the design bits (and I promise you, it &#60;em&#62;will&#60;/em&#62; be intuitive). This thread is for the suggestions you'd like to see incorporated into the next iteration. We can't guarantee anything, but we figure listening to ideas and letting people hash things out would be a good thing to do. If anything, it could give all of us some new ideas as to what we still need to do w/r/t the current community use of the site.

<title>Chris Poirier on "topwebfiction.com open"</title>
<link>http://forums.webfictionguide.com/topic/topwebfictioncom-open#post-4267</link>

<description>&#60;p&#62;Hi all,&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;We've opened a new web site for WFG listings: &#60;a href=&#34;http://topwebfiction.com/&#34;&#62;topwebfiction.com&#60;/a&#62;.  This site is ordered entirely by reader votes.  Votes are linked to user IP, so no login is necessary to vote.  At the moment, a vote has a lifetime of 7 days, so your readers will need to return to re-vote at least once a week in order to maintain your vote count.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;In order to encourage your readers to vote for you, TWF allows you to include an incentive URL to the voting booth, where your reader will be redirected after successfully voting for your listing.  The idea would be that you would offer (for instance) early access to the next regular installment, or to a bonus story, so some such thing, in exchange for the vote.  &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The top 10 spots on the listings will display a banner ad for your listing, if you supply one to us.  We'll need a standard, PG-rated, non-animated banner ad (468x60).  If you want in, just email your banner ad to submissions at webfictionguide dot com and mention which listing it is for.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;There is a link to your voting booth on the &#34;have your say&#34; section of your WFG listing.  If you don't have an incentive to offer, you can just copy that link directly, and put it on your website.  If you do want to offer an incentive, there are two ways.  First, you can append &#34;&#38;amp;goto=&#34; and the incentive URL to the end of that link.  That's by far the easiest way, and should work on any website.  However, it exposes your incentive URL right in the address bar.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Alternatively, you can set up a form on your web page, with method POST, and include a hidden field named &#34;goto&#34;, for the incentive URL.  If what I said is Greek to you, you want the earlier option.  ;-)&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Finally, the site software got written this weekend, and may still have bugs.  If you find something wrong, let us know.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Chris.

<description>&#60;p&#62;Hi all,&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I want WFG to be a friendly place.  Honest, yes, but friendly, too.  &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Things have not been that friendly here for the last few days.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;When you post here, please watch your tone.  If you are annoyed by a posting, and it's making you feel defensive or angry, maybe it's not the appropriate time to respond.  Further, please refrain from lecturing people who don't agree with you.  This is not the place for it.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Sometimes, the best thing to do when somebody says something you don't like, is to simply ignore it.  &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;This forum has historically been a friendly, supportive place.  Sure, we sometimes have our disagreements, but it has seldom turned to huffiness and vitriol like it has in the last few days.  Can we all please just get back to the way it was?&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Thanks!&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Chris.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;P.S. If you want to discuss this further, you can email me at cpoirier at webfictionguide.com.

<description>&#60;p&#62;Hi all,&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Just to let you know, in the next few days, we'll be switching to a (nearly) fully automated submission process.  The user front-end is already complete, and once the administration screens are done, we'll be making the switch.  All new listings will still be edited, but the process will be a lot faster than it has been.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;For those of you who are planning to submit something in the next few days, you'll want to hold off until the new system goes live.  We've built up a large backlog of new submissions over the last several weeks, while the new software was the priority.  It amounts to several person-days of work to process them all the way we have been.  As a result, it is my intention to return all of the pending submissions to the submitters and ask them to re-enter them in the new system.  &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Chris.

<title>Chris Poirier on "Upcoming changes to WFG"</title>

<description>&#60;p&#62;Hi all,&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;In the next week or two, I'll be making some changes to the WFG software.  The primary change will be that new listings will no longer be displayed on the home page, nor in the primary site RSS feed.  Instead, there will be a new feed expressly for new listings, and a link on the listings page to the most recent listing.  Listings will also be linked together in a chain on two dimensions: listing date (newest-to-oldest) and ranking.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The vacated home page space and primary feed will instead be used to publicize events: new articles (as before), new editorial ratings at or above 3 stars (in place of the new listings), and bulletins from listings at or above 3.5 stars (as before).  Hopefully, this will help make the home page more useful to new and regular users, as everything there will be vetted and of a certain quality level.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I'm also going to be working on making some kind of guided-tour functionality -- to make it easier for new users to find good stuff without having to traipse through the entire catalogue.  I'm still working out the details, but I'm seeing this as something both editors and active members will be able to participate in.  More on this as I work it out.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;If there are any other burning issues you guys would like addressed, please post here and I may try to get to some of them if I can.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Chris.
