I've been thinking about this quite a bit, and I'm not sure how it is for many of you out there, but for me, writing really seems to come in stages. I can write most of the time, but the inspiration to type out a whole chapter of a story in one sitting happens far more sparingly.

Which brings me back to my question. Is there something that helps motivate or inspire these writing sessions for you?

Mine consist of several things. My mood/health (the worse it is, the more I seem to write), listening to a specific music artist (VNV Nation) or driving. I drive a lot for school, so plenty of time for thinking.

So what about everyone else? What works for you?

Hey all, I know I've been absent a while, and I feel kinda bad being a little spammerific as my first message here in months, BUUUUT!

A couple of good friends of mine are working on a wonderful project and are trying to launch it. They have written and illustrated a wonderful children's book, and have a kickstarter for it!

Please, please, pretty please, consider sharing with your readers? These guys have an awesome product, and I want to see it become a reality.

Well, I think I've figured out my next project. It's a little scary though.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I've finished up with Pay Me, Bug! and I'm trying to flesh out what my next project is going to be. I was torn between two stories that are in various stages of completion:

Northlander, a dark fantasy murder mystery, kinda sorta, and

The Points Between, sort of an urban fantasy, kinda, but it doesn't really fit with classic urban fantasy tropes, and might be closer to a ghost story but not really. It's hard to describe and probably equally hard to sell.

So of the two, just looking at the descriptions, Northlander is the obvious choice. It's easier to describe in a sentence. It also has the advantage of being further along.

But... The Points Between was inspired by Charles Williams. If you've never heard of Charles Williams, we'll, that's not a surprise -- he was a contemporary of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, and a fellow Inkling, and his fiction was fantastically weird but not generally known. He's one of my favorite authors, and when I started TPB I used him as inspiration because it was going to be hard to do.

Anyway. His birthday is on September 20. It seems like the perfect launching point, assuming I can push forward and get this beast rolling.

So there it is. Because his birthday is kind of close I'm going with the much-more-difficult-to-explain-and-therefore-write-not-to-mention-market story.

WINDMILL! CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGE!

Just in general, I was wondering what other people do to surprise readers. Do you like building little details so suspense and tension rise? Do you drop big bombs on your readers out of the blue? Do you leave hints and clues?

What do you find effective? What hasn't worked?

(This is pretty broad... so hopefully it's fun).

So, I finished The Last Skull (for now), and I've picked up another story, Company of Crows, which is in more of a fantasy genre than my previous work (I've been a huge fan of fantasy since forever, and wanted to try something a little more slowly paced than I usually write).

I thought I'd mention it here in case anyone was interested in reading. I've also given thought to starting up a review blog, if only because I've been told my reviews are entertaining, and I'd like to keep reading and writing to stave off the godawful bouts of depression.

I still have to refit the navigation for Company of Crows (at the moment, there are only five chapters, so navigation is minimal--but eventually I'm considering instigating podcasts possibly, along with the standard table of contents), but otherwise I'd love to hear what people think (I've submitted it to webfiction guide already, but I imagine it's going to be a while before it's up and posted on the site).

So it's been a rough few weeks for me--I'd rather not go too deep into the details--but now I'm back, and anyone who's following the Last Skull is invited to continue following Sue Daysdale's exploits (though if you'd rather not after my extended disappearance, I'd understand!). I've posted the next two bits and I'm getting ready to keep pushing on:

http://the-last-skull.blogspot.com/2010/11/epoch-5.html
and
http://the-last-skull.blogspot.com/2010/11/mask-gallery-rockstar.html

...are the two most recent bits, detailing the arrival of a new villain in Scourge's employ (Rockstar, a musically-inclined rock golem who wants to bring about the 'Rockalypse' and replace the hippie screed of 'Peace and Love' with one of 'Hate and Awesome').

...of course, if you haven't ever read any of this, nothing I just said will likely make any sense, in which case I apologize in advance.

I post my book on wordpress and I am having a problem trying to figure out how to put ALL of my posts on the sidebar so people can quickly navigate from Chapter 1 to Chapter 20 or whatever the case may be. Right now it shows recent posts but those recent posts only go to 15 available posts. While my book is only up to 7 posts (7 Chapters) it's not a huge issue now, but it will be. Does anyone have any knowledge on this the'd be willing to share with me? I would greatly appreciate your time in explaining this to me so I can make it easier for my readers. As always, thanks in advance.

Gavin Williams on "New Reader Interaction Ideas"

So I was surfing the net and a little while ago I came across this great Novelr guest article by Cecilia Tan:

http://www.novelr.com/2010/10/28/passing-the-hat

I really liked her idea for inspiring donations from her audience by setting targets for specific storylines and plot twists, so that readers got to get involved in shaping the details of the story itself. That's a lot cooler than just asking for random donations, or just having say a three update a week schedule and giving a bonus chapter.

So for anyone who's following "The Surprising Life and Death of Diggory Franklin" I challenged my readers to submit storyline ideas, and after I've had a few I'll do a poll for what the audience finds the most interesting, and set donation goals for that target. The blog about it is here: http://gavinwilliams.digitalnovelists.com/node/805

I think inviting your audience to tell you what they'd like to see in a plot is a little risky, but also fun for interaction -- especially since they're mainly asking for greater detail on things they've already seen hinted at. It gives me as a writer insight into the corners of the story world that I might have a blind spot for, but that readers want to see.

Anyone else have their own ideas on reader interaction? What's working for you?

I was just wondering how long it takes to get something approved and/or denied on this site when you submit your work? I submmitted my work in progress two weeks ago and it's still in the 'awaiting editor attention' status. Just kind of curious. I've only found one post on this topic where someone was told it took 5 days so I thought I would ask again. Thanks in advance.

IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP! (Then again, maybe it's just me and I'm using "author vision", where one's own works look like sins against the natural order, despite your best attempts at trying to make something decent and/or beautiful.) Now, I USED to use KompoZer, but I've recently switched over to SeaMonkey Composer, which isn't all that different.

So, to the main point, please list your site and what you used to make it. Something like...

Hello to everyone here at Web Fiction Guide.
Now that my two stories are listed here, I would like to share my web serial site, Ayami Publications, with everyone here: http://ayami.rain.org/

There I am serializing novels I have written (and I hope to one day also share the work of other writers, if I can ever get out of the cave long enough to find any) . There are currently two going, which are listed here on Web Fiction Guide at:
http://webfictionguide.com/listings/beyond-knowledge/
and http://webfictionguide.com/listings/to-see-the-stars/

Both are sci-fi, but while To See the Stars as God is more an adventure story, Beyond Knowledge is a social drama.
Please read and comment, and know that there will be many more stories there in the future, all of which I will be listing here.
