I launched my new web serial, Special People, a few weeks ago. I'd appreciate feedback on the site design.

I've kept things really simple. It's the newest default WordPress theme (TwentyEleven), but customized and with a bunch of modified CSS.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestions!

Gavin Williams on "Crossover Experiment anyone?"

Springboarding off the discussion about successful weblit elsewhere in the forum, I had an idea thanks to Allan. He suggested crossovers between dfferent writers' characters where appropriate. Not only would this be fun for writers and readers, but it would create more exposure for stories -- the two audiences would overlap.

Allan, very kindly, mentioned my own protagonist, Diggory Franklin. Currently he's not really on the market for a cross over with say Dash from Allan's supernatural thrillers, because Diggory lives in a world much like our own until 2008 when he finds out his girlfriend invents time travel. There's no room for ghosts or monsters in his realm -- though I wouldn't rule out what might happen in the future. One of Diggory's contemporaries, Dahlia Sorley, is currently embroiled in a superhero crossover as we speak, so eventually he might be available.

No Man an Island is a completed story right now, so there's not a lot of wiggle room for a crossover there either. But I have an idea based on something else Allan said in a comment on my site months and months ago. He asked if I'd ever consider letting people contribute to my Samaritan Project with side stories. At the time the story was still finding a direction, but I didn't forget the idea.

Soooooo -- what I'm proposing is to let other kids play with my toys. In other words, I'm inviting any writers or readers who want to try writing to come over to the Samaritan Project on my site and check out the characters. I'm currently on Volume 3, using the unnamed protagonist and his two friends Dorothy and Rebecca, but the rest of the characters are "off-stage" and could very well have stories of their own.

You can write spy missions, skirmishes, origin stories, an ordinary day, or crossover with your own characters if there seems to be a good fit. I'll blog about your story site in return, with a review and a link so my readers are aware of your work. Or reciprocate with collaborating with your characters if you want -- that might be fun. I'll act as editor for the story you submit (gavin_strider@yahoo.com) or give suggestions if you get stuck -- but mostly you'll have creative freedom to play with my characters. If it doesn't suit my continuity somehow, I can always make it a fun Elseworlds/What If variant like DC comics or Marvel. But I'm sure there's room to accomodate a lot of ideas.

Any takers? I think it would be fun. Here's the link to Samaritan's start: http://gavinwilliams.digitalnovelists.com/samaritan

Hey again!

I thought I'd let you guys know about the series of posts I'm doing this week over at http://www.CheapAssFicition.com

Every day I'm taking on a new debate about posting fiction online, including:

Posting online--why or why not?
Plagiarism--Stealing ideas
Writing under the pressure of a schedule
Quality of web fiction
And hopefully other topics that will be suggested throughout the week

I'm hoping to confront some of the controversies in web fiction, and try to get some discussion going. I don't want to clutter up the board here, so I'll keep you guys updated in this thread.

I hope I'll see some of you over there.

Hey folks,

First time here,

I've been thinking about this since I read an onion article making fun of an author for being too much of a wuss to kill his characters.

How do you know when it's time for a character to die? I'm really attached to mine, but I am considering killing one of them, if only to increase suspense in the story.

Thanks for your time.

So, I finished The Last Skull (for now), and I've picked up another story, Company of Crows, which is in more of a fantasy genre than my previous work (I've been a huge fan of fantasy since forever, and wanted to try something a little more slowly paced than I usually write).

I thought I'd mention it here in case anyone was interested in reading. I've also given thought to starting up a review blog, if only because I've been told my reviews are entertaining, and I'd like to keep reading and writing to stave off the godawful bouts of depression.

I still have to refit the navigation for Company of Crows (at the moment, there are only five chapters, so navigation is minimal--but eventually I'm considering instigating podcasts possibly, along with the standard table of contents), but otherwise I'd love to hear what people think (I've submitted it to webfiction guide already, but I imagine it's going to be a while before it's up and posted on the site).

Happy April Fools' Day!

Lyn Thorne-Alder and I had an idea, a few months back, to experiment with writing each others' stories. What better opportunity than April Fool's Day? We really can't take any credit, however, as we were as hands-off as it is possible to be while still running an event. The hilarity, cleverness and general fantastic ability of people who participated speaks for itself, so without further ado, the master list:

Howard Tayler does a great webcomic called "Schlock Mercenary" (http://www.schlockmercenary.com) -- it's a space opera comic that was nominated for a Hugo last year. He recently posted something where he made a distinction between "Commercial" and "Traditional" publishing, noting that the term "Traditional Publishing" was invented by predatory vanity presses trying to recast their reputations at the expense of publishing houses.

I found the distinction interesting and that the fight between the two was sort of squeezing out legitimate self-publishers, and posted about it here: https://www.eviscerati.net/article/2011/02/08/commercial-v-traditional-we-need-gripping-hand

Thought there might be some interest.

I'm a big fan of TV Tropes, a site devoted to cataloging all the conventions (or tropes), negative or positive in popular entertainment. I've been digging through the site, and finding Tropes that fit my own stories. Examples:

Cast Full of Gay, or Bi, as mine usually turn out to be, at leasti n 7 Days. That just kind of happened.

Hello to everyone here at Web Fiction Guide.
Now that my two stories are listed here, I would like to share my web serial site, Ayami Publications, with everyone here: http://ayami.rain.org/

There I am serializing novels I have written (and I hope to one day also share the work of other writers, if I can ever get out of the cave long enough to find any) . There are currently two going, which are listed here on Web Fiction Guide at:
http://webfictionguide.com/listings/beyond-knowledge/

Both are sci-fi, but while To See the Stars as God is more an adventure story, Beyond Knowledge is a social drama.
Please read and comment, and know that there will be many more stories there in the future, all of which I will be listing here.

Robert Rodgers on "The Last Skull - Webpage and Editor Review?"

I've given The Last Skull an organizational face-lift (visibly not different, but the table of contents reads a *lot* more clearly now, and I hope that things are a bit more clear--you have to click twice to get to whatever issue you want to read, but I'm hoping that's offset by the fact that things are now separated and have their own spaces). I've added a cast page (admittedly, with only one submission--as an aside, my wife, responsible for the art, is available for commissions here! We are in Canada, working and desperately scrambling for more cash), an 'extras' page (for the Mulligan short, 12 Seconds, as well as anything else that eventually makes its way there), and removed the News page (I don't think anyone was paying attention to it anyway). Any sort of feedback toward the structuring would be helpful--whether or not things were hard to find, ways to make them easier, whether I should reduce the size of the description for each 'book', etc.

In addition, I wanted to ask about an editor review--I hope that I'm not crossing a line with that request, but it's largely because I haven't had an image for my website here for over 3 months, so just an editor popping in and going "yeah, so the story is apparently not just a link toward pokemon porn, *SCREENSHOT*" would be immensely appreciated (a more thorough review would *also* be appreciated, but I understand if things are just too busy).

Er, and reviews in *general* are also immensely appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Hello all!

I am inviting everyone to visit my serial fiction blog, The Noble Pirates (http://thenoblepirates.com). Book One is finally finished, and while the story isn't over yet, it's a somewhat satisfying conclusion. ;) Let me know what you think, and if you like it, rate it!

Thanks,
Fiction Chick

I need to change several things on my listing.

I'd like to add to the existing tags, and display a feed for new entries. How would I go about doing this?
