Well, more or less. After two weeks of trying to find out why my server (and thus site) was down, I've discovered that the server's motherboard toasted itself into a lump or charcoal. Or, as Elaine would put it, the mobo let the magic smoke out.

I spent most of today making a pretty little page that will temporarily hold its place whilst I line up new hosting. I made cute graphics and everything! It will take me some time to get the hard drive out of the hold server so that I can restore the old site from backup. However, until that happens, I won't have Dread Vote online anymore. Instead, I'm going to have to run with the next novel.

Question, though, for those who might be in the know. What's a good Wordpress theme for webserials? I was running with a weird variation on Hemingway that I'd come to like -- although it did seem to have some issues for readers.

I'm considering switching my story from livejournal to a wordpress blog because I lust after the 'schedule posts' function like nothing else. I am bad at getting posts up on time. I want to make software do it for me.

So, everyone, what do you think of your current hosts? What made you choose them, and what are the pros and cons?

Hiya folks, as a long time lurker and writer (www.adammaxwell.com) and occassional poster I thought I would pop around here and offer you all a bit of an opportunity.

I am in the process of setting up a web business and the first part I have sorted out is web hosting. one area I know i want to concentrate on is supporting hosting for bloggers and I want your feedback.

I have put together a blog hosting package which contains:

Free .co.uk or .com domain name

POP3 Email Account

Webmail access

Email forwarding addresses

MySql database

100 MB of webspace

1 GB transfer per month

Automatically submit your site to major search engines

Web statisitcs

One click install of Wordpress, Geeklog or Necleus through your control panel. Or you can install whichever other blog you prefer...

FTP Access

Now what I want to know for starters is that IF you were to take the plunge would this be something you would go for - what do you think? more of this? less of that? not enough of the other?

Oh and the price will be £15.17 ($21.55) one off setup fee and then £7.08 ($10.06) per month from then on. And yes, I realise how obscure those amounts are but let's not get into that :)

For anyone who wants to go any further and actually order the hosting I accept Paypal and Google Checkout and as I am asking for you feedback it is only fair you get it all on the cheap. As a result I have set up a WFG discount code to give you a discount of £10 ($14.20) and it's valid until the end of March. All you have to do is enter:
wfg001
as the discount code and promise you'll tell me what you'd like to see me to better.

come on folks, blog hosting in general is crap and I want to make it good and I think you can help.

cheers

adam

Come One Come All to check out my webserial's layout and suchlike and offer advice, complaints, and other such constructive criticisms as you see fit regarding the layout, color scheme, general readabillity and usabillity of the site, etc.

Thanks in advance. Feel free to leave any comments either here or at the forum on the site.

P.S. why yes, Widget does have a problem whereby she uses compulsive CSS coding as a way to procrastinate actually writing anything.

P.P.S. my site is a free site hosted on wikidot.com, which is an awesome site provider if you can handle a little bit of coding. If you know any CSS at all it becomes massively awesome, and I wholly recommend it to anyone looking for a free site provider/hosting service/etc.

P.P.P.S. posted under writting>>general chat because as far as I can tell that's where things like this end up, if I'm wrong please tell/reprimand/move/delete me as required.

Flak on "Anyone familiar with good web hosts?"

I already have a site (have had for a long time), but am looking to switch hosts. I'm on godaddy currently, which was recommended to me by my older brother three years ago (it was exceptionally cheap back then, and is much less so now). I've read some worrying things about their business practices and seen their ads now (seriously, guys?), and I've been having <i>major</i> slow-downs with my site on and off the last year.

I'm currently contemplating Hostgator, Dreamhost, and Bluehost.

Does anyone know of any better ones? Or know anything about those that should give me pause?

My requirements are these, by the way:
- At least a couple gigs of diskspace (not a problem with most hosts these days)
- A few dozen gigs of data transfer (again, not a problem with most hosts these days)
- Preferably, many mysql databases
- A TOS that doesn't have vague things like in it like "no obscenity"
- A TOS that doesn't say I can't host multiple sites
- The ability to host multiple domain names with one account
- Linux OS with stuff like php, all the regulars

If the host is also a domain registrar, all the better but not a requirement.
The sites I intend to host are pretty normal... Wordpress, phpBB, and plain old HTML files :)

Hullo everyone,

Since I have tons of bandwidth and storage going to spare on my hosting plan, and I do mean <i>tons</i>, I figured I'd do something decent and offer it to people here.

Anyone who's interested is welcome to a free subdomain on streetofeyes.com (or even a fully hosted domain if you've already bought/are buying a domain name, they're $10 for a year), with full FTP/shell access and all the goodies without any of the hassle.

I don't ask anything in return except a link to Street, and maybe some pimping every once in a while. ;)

If you're interested, just post here and we can figure out the technicals.

Regards,
Ryan

If you're looking for a new place to host your web serial, I highly recommend MeiLin's new site, digitalnovelists.com.

I decided I wanted the professionalism of a non-blogger/wordpress site and so I contacted MeiLin earlier today. She was prompt in her responses and more than helpful in getting me started and helping me with any problems I had. Thanks to her, I was able to fully transition over to the new site today.

So if you've been considering getting your own site, I strongly recommend dropping MeiLin a line.
