Editorial review policy is changing

10 years ago | Chris Poirier (Moderator)

Hi all,

I've just posted an announcement on the main site about editorial reviews. Short version: we won't be reviewing every new listing, from now on.

I've started this thread for comments, lamentations, and cheering. As you see fit. ;-)

Chris.

What will it take for a story to catch an editor's eye? Personal tastes? On a whim? X number of reader reviews? Do we get to see into the illustrious world of the editors, or is that for editor eyes only?

Could be any number of things: quality writing, member interest, a certain "something". We'll be trying to look at every listing within a week or two, which will be a lot quicker than we've been managing recently (our backlog was over 6 weeks long). Stuff that's just plain average probably won't get a review, would be my initial guess. At least not often.

The point of the software changes is that it will actually improve things. Before the change, new listings were relegated to the bottom of the deck for however long it took for an editor to get to them. Now, they go immediately to the middle, and members can start pushing them up the rankings immediately. In fact, I think it is now possible for a new listing to go to the first page of the overall listings on day one, without any editorial intervention, should the membership act to put it there. That's a big change.

    Hi all,

In support of the new setup, I've just added review statistics to the site. On the member shelves page, there's a new section that will give you some basic statistics about your own reviews and how yours stack up against everyone else's. Then, on the About page, I've added a full ranking of all reviewers, by activity and helpfulness. Check it out. And let me know if you find any problems.

    Chris.

The review statistics is interesting, I looked at it via the About page and didn't find any problems. Congratulations to Linda in the Number One spot! Maybe she should get a prize! :)
