Hi I'm New and Just Getting Started - Does My Site Look Okay?

Hi everyone!

I'm new here. I've been lurking for... it can't be almost a month already wow! Anyway, I screwed up the courage, edited just a tad and started posting my NaNovel from this year as a serial. I'm not far enough along in my posting yet to submit it officially, but I will around the end of next month.

So, I was hoping I could get someone to check it out? Here's my synopsis/cover blurb as it stands (I'd block quote it, but apparently I don't know how):

Amanda just wants a lazy summer before starting college in the fall. Play some video games with her friends, raft down the river, lounge by the pool, and maybe – if she’s feeling ambitious – go hiking or race a triathlon or two.

That’s just not happening..

She thought the job her mom made her get was bad. Then, one morning at work, all technology fails. The lights go out, cars crash outside, and phones stop working. Even the stove won’t light.

When her mom fails to make it home the next day, Amanda and her friends set out to find her and the reason nothing works.

Very clean layout and pretty easy to navigate so far....easy to read text that's not too big or too small, too light or too dark.

Looks pretty good to me! The social media bar is a little big, though (but very cute).

Thanks Erin, I'm going to have to see how to make it smaller or not. I might just pull it out and see if I can put in a facebook like or something little.

Good idea. I do suggest it's helpful to have a clear indication of genre/genres. Mind you I haven't done anything like that in mine yet (but it does have 'vampire' in the title and a picture of a saint in the sidebar so I guess one can figure out it's somewhere in the fantasy fiction and the Christian/Catholic fiction slots.)

very minimalist, but I like it! The tabs at the top rock. the nerdette escape ad breaks your sidebar though.

It's a great start. It's very easy to navigate and to understand. The one suggestion I would make from a web design perspective is to either remove the "middle" column that exists between your side bar and the main content, or at least shrink it down. The strip of white space in there is distracting and due to the top border on the content column only covering the top of the content (which leaves an approximately 210 pixel wide gap just right of centre).

Thank you all! I apologize for not checking back in sooner. Last month was a very busy month for me and then I'm going to be auditing a course this month (I'm very excited, I'm kind of testing the waters of grad school). Anyway, fixing the problem mad hacktress pointed out took me awhile to figure out. I finally realized that I hadn't removed the default spacing for my right inner sidebar from my theme, even though I didn't want one.

And yes, I know you pretty much said that, but I'm still learning these things, so I'm a little slow about where all this stuff is.

And I increased the right sidebar width to fix the nerdette image.

Mel, I'm glad that you're back, and I'm glad that you figured out how to remove the white space, too.

I'm really enjoying what you have written so far and I am looking forward to reading more when you post it... no pressure, but, y'know, I'm kinda bored this afternoon. ;)

I like the clean minimalist layout. And the story looks pretty good too, I'm gonna go have a read :D
