Pingbacks

2 years ago | Billy Higgins Peery (Member)

As is common practice, I put "Next Chapter" and "Previous Chapter" links at the bottom of every post. For some reason, Wordpress sends automatic pingbacks every time I do this, even though it's me linking to my own posts. This is kind of annoying -- especially this week, when I moved to a new site, and thus had to deal with a hundred-ish pingbacks at once.

Is there any way to turn these pingbacks off? I thought about putting them into spam, but then I realized that might somehow label my whole blog as spam.

You can turn off pingbacks entirely for a post, but I don't think you can do it selectively (at least not with non-premium WordPress)

Hm, yeah. I was kind of worried about that. Maybe I'll turn off pingbacks entirely. I'll have to think about it.

Do you add them in by hand on each post?

I don't get pingbacks for mine. I have the previous/next links as part of the post template, which get resolved automagically for me. I see you're on wordpress.com, so I'm not sure if you can use this, but the code is:

    <div class="alignleft"><?php previous_post_link('&laquo; %link') ?></div>
    <div class="alignright"><?php next_post_link('%link &raquo;') ?></div>

    What do pingbacks do, exactly?

Let you know where a link to that chapter have been placed.

From what I can tell, Pingbacks fuck your shit up. Maybe if other people are linking a lot to your stuff and you aren't, they might be useful. Otherwise, they're just a pain and I hate them. I wish you could turn them off by default.

Pingbacks (on WordPress anyways) basically create a comment on a page/post that links back to where someone linked to your page/post. It's a nice little 'auto-reciprocal' feature when someone links to your work from outside your own site, but when you're linking to your own stuff (making Table of Contents, making more obvious chapter navigation links, etc) it's just a HUGE pain in the ass.
