TWF Banners: How do you do them?

5 years ago | ubersoft (Member)

I know this question has been asked before, in fact I remember reading one of the posts where it was asked -- but I can't for the life of me find it. I don't know if it's because I'm using the wrong keywords on the search or if it's sitting right in front of me and I'm just not recognizing it... whichever it is, I'm gonna just ask the question again...

On the Top Web Fiction side of things, some listed serials have snazzy banners and some are just text entries. How do you go from being a just-text-entry to a snazzy banner? I vaguely recall, the last time I read through the process, that it was kind of a pain for Chris because he had to add the banner manually, but I'm not sure if I'm remembering right. If I am I'll probably continue not bothering.

You need to be in the top 15 or so for the banner to appear. And, last time I remember, you need to email Chris with the banner you want to appear on the list. I have no recollection of how big it's supposed to be, however.

You could probably just check the sizes of the ones present. Mine never load for some reason. Which is sad, because they're neat.

As Syphax said, the work must be in the top 15 for the banner to show up (but as far as I know, Chris applies the banner just the once, so dropping off and back on the top 15 doesn't cause extra work for him)

The banner must be PG-rated, non-animated, and 468x60 in size, emailed to (with the subject line "TopWebFiction Banner" if I remember right). Chris applies the banner by hand to the serial, and it automatically shows up whenever that serial is in the top 15.

I'd suggest doing it: at the time of my last asking around, serials with banners get more clickthroughs from TWF than serials without

    Mayhaps, you use adblock?

Smort. Thank you Durrendal, I get to look at the pretty pictures now.

Possibly is the post you were looking for? I tracked it down a few days ago because I was going to try to set up an incentive. (Which I couldn't get to work, but that's a whole 'nother ball game. I probably either need to sit down and look at what I'm doing more closely or give up because it's a WordPress site and it's probably not ever going to work.)

The only thing the post has that Maddirose hasn't already mentioned is the naming convention Chris wanted used: "For those of you planning to send me banners, could you name it like your listing and save me a bit of work? For instance, if your listing is, and the banner's a PNG, could you name it xyz-abc-def.png when you send it to me. I can accept .jpg, .png, and .gif graphics."

Of course, I just realized that post is 6 years old, so maybe there's more current info anyhow. >.<

One of the disadvantages of using a seven-year old, long dead listing is that It comes with a seven-year-old, long dead TWF banner XD And I've already caused enough hassle from the constant edits I've had to make to said listing, so I'm reluctant to add even more work with a "and now can you change my banner?" email.

    Protip: don't revive dead listings.

@Dary: It's fine, just email me the new banner. ;)

And, yes, it saves me some work if the file is already named correctly. But I don't remember the last time that happened, so I've gotten over it. :)
