WFG Patreon account

tl;dr: Help us pay for better servers (that can run better software)!

Hi everyone,

As discussed elsewhere, WFG is currently hosted on a shared server, in order to keep costs low. This means we have (quite) limited computing resources for doing interesting things with the software. For instance, one of the reasons a lot of stories don't have an episode list is that we can't process all that many RSS feeds on our current system.

To date, I have refused to put ads on WFG, and I would like to see that policy continue. However, moving WFG to its own server would significantly increase the monthly hosting costs. So, I've created a Patreon account for those of you who want to pitch in.

Authors please note: your donation, while greatly appreciated, will in no way benefit your listing. :) We have to keep things fair for everyone.

Currently, I've set us two goals for AWS hosting, both in USD. The first is for $60/month, which gets us a single all-in-one AWS server, where we'll run all of the site software. If we can get to $85/month, I'll put the database on a managed server where someone professional can deal with security patches and backups, which will save me a bunch of time and headaches. Note: these prices are for mid-line machines. If after some real world testing I find I can get away with less, I'll do so and adjust the goals appropriately.

Thanks for considering supporting WFG!

    I'll swing $4/month for now. The $4 USD'll be $5 something in CAD, so this works out. :)

    Sadly, AWS fees are in USD. However, $4/month is very generous. Thank you. :)

    Let's reach the 85$ milestone so Chris has more time for editioral reviews. :D

    I'll join in when I know my budget for the next few months.

    I owe WFG a lot. Am making a living as an author, and WFG helped me get my foot in the door, am exceedingly happy to pay it forward (back?).

    If I didn't have some nasty bills to pay I'd kick in :\ Wishing you luck nonetheless.

    Thanks to everyone who has pledged, so far! There doesn't seem to be a way for me to send individual responses through Patreon, so I'll thank you all, collectively, here. And I've cleared the next few weekends to work on building better software for the site.

    I think I can do $1.00 a month. I'd do more, but after this past week, I really can't afford it. Prom is fucking expensive, and I have a bit of an addiction to most-expensive-possible options.

    Even $1/month is a great help, and much appreciated!

    Once I can get my budget done for the month, I'll see what I can kick in. This is an awesome site, and I definitely want to contribute. :)

    We are currently at $47/month, which is short of the $60/month goal for moving to AWS, but high enough to allow me to do it anyway. I'll aim to do the work next weekend.

    Initially, I'll be moving over the existing software, and adopting a gradual upgrade/replacement strategy. Priorities:

    1) removing the "recently vetted" section, which hasn't been used in some time;
    2) enabling RSS feeds for all listings;
    3) expanding community input to what gets shown in the "Selected Updates" feed on the home page;
    4) overhauling the site formatting to work better on mobile devices.

    After those initial changes, I'm thinking these are my next priorities:

    1) reworking the submission process to make it easier for everyone (and therefore faster);
    2) eliminating the "recommended" checkbox for listings (which is neither well understood nor much used);
    3) redesigning how the listings are ordered, hopefully to improve relevance;
    4) eliminating WordPress as the basis for the site software;
    5) implementing a better recommendation system;

    Thank you for posting an update, Chris! Reminded me that I needed to pledge! :)
