Characters with Facebook/Twitter personas

Like 7.3 million other people, I'm writing a novel online. As an experiment, I'm creating Facebook and Twitter accounts for many of my characters, so they can interact with my fans (thanks, Mom!) and with each other. I assume that I'm not the first person to do this, has anyone else here played with the concept? How has it worked out for you?

BTW, the novel is at:

...and links to my characters' Facebook and Twitter pages is at:

Looking forward to your feedback.

WOW. That's a lot of characters you have there! I don't know how you keep up with it all.

Having a facebook account for them seems like too much effort to me, but I have two character twitters - @lakesidejake and @hoowl. If you poke through their followers list you'll find a host of other characters. :)

Somebody made a twitter list for those, let me go and look it up.

Here it is!

I think Nancy will gladly add your characters if you poke her

Wow, that's impressive. I've considered the twitter idea a few times, but I don't think I'd be able to keep up that many characters, especially in between writing and editing.

Isn't FB supposed to be for real people? You might be violating the TOS there.

I'm always amused when characters from a time or place where there's no reason for them to have access to Twitter get accounts. By contrast, I'm setting something in the modern day, and haven't set up accounts for any of the characters. Sometimes I think I should.

I made a Twitter account for my main character but not the others. It serves two purposes -- 1) fans can subscribe to it and get the blog auto-tweets to the account when a new chapter is posted but 2) I can let my character express himself a little.

He's annoyed at me right now for talking about him in the third person. So far he's answered some of the comments on the novel site himself, and I have answered some, because interestingly enough some people have left comments for HIM. Since the novel is in first person it makes sense, I guess!

The novel is called Daron's Guitar Chronicles ( and he's daron_moondog on Twitter. He follows a couple of real world musicians including Trent Reznor, Perry Farrell, and Eddie Van Halen.
